The Story
Developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), OMEGA's new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer delivers on all that it promises. Housed in a grade 2 titanium case, this one-of-a-kind 45mm chronograph displays time and time zones both on our planet and on the mysterious Red Planet. All of this is made possible by a new micro-controller, developed and programmed to apply the equation of time to both planets. The watch's ability to tell time anywhere allows the innovative solar compass to determine north on both Earth and Mars. The watch also indicates the heliocentric longitude of the Red Planet, as well as the date and time for three different locations (at the prime meridian of Martian Sol + two user-defined locations), accounting for the longer 2.7% of days on Mars than those on Earth.
The model features a classic black dial with a contrasting background to offer analogue and digital readings and make the symbols of the Earth even clearerand of Mars, placed to indicate the function in use. Framing the dial, a bezel with a hematite red oxalic anodized aluminum ring recalls the unmistakable Martian soil. An extraordinary color also present on the second hand, characterized by a shade that turns from black to red. Turning the watch, you discover the caseback on which the iconic “Speedmaster” wording and the emblematic OMEGA hippocampus stand out embossed in the center, surrounded by the wording SPEEDMASTER X-33 MARSTIMER, ESA TESTED AND QUALIFIED. The watch is powered by the Omega caliber 5622. For those who would like an alternative to the grade 2 and 5 titanium bracelet, the Marstimer watch has also been equipped with a dedicated NATO strap, presented in the special cylinder case which bears a tribute to the Red Planet on the internal lining: a reproduction of the Hebes Chasma, a large steep and craggy canyon on the Martian surface.
